Volunteer work
I am cutting paper
I am designing the shape of wordsI did a lot of volunteer work between 2008 and 2009. I am not only a member of volunteer club, but in school I also did some volunteer work, for instance, I sometimes helped my planning teacher Ms.Bartell to do some volunteer work.
I helped Ms. Bartell to check some Quizzes, cut lots of paper and do translations work. I always did the volunteer work in teacher’s staff room. Some of the work was not easy and I realized that teaching is hard work. Imagine if there are no students doing volunteer work, teachers need to spend much more leisure time doing them. They will be very tired so I am proud that I can ease teachers of their burden. It is very important for us to respect teachers because Kings are appointed by God, parents bring you in to life, but teacher show you the meaning of life. When I checked some quizzes with a red pen, I felt that I was a teacher; it was my responsibility to give all students correct marks. That was the reason why I marked so carefully. When I cut some pieces of paper, I cut carefully as well even though this was an easy job. I know Success always goes to those who do their job painstakingly. When I did translations work, although it is a challenge for me whose mother language is not English, I love it very much because I could learn lots of vocabularies.
Before GCA 3rd annual fashion show, the chairman of the student union Fiona wanted to find someone who could write words in a fancy style. I am good at art so I decided to do volunteer work for the fashion show. We needed to write the words “GCA fashion show” in a fancy style which could attractive audience. We decided to write GCA on the bright red color paper . Many volunteers did cutting and painting work together. A song said, Unity is strength, the strength is iron, and the strength is steel. Also, in this volunteer work, teamwork is very important. As we all known, effective teamwork can produce incredible results. During this volunteer work, each person was hard-working and we almost finished the whole work in the limited time.
Through this volunteer work, I realized that to succeed at the task in hand everyone involved needs to combine their efforts. It is absolutely necessary for team members to understand what their role on the team is, what he/she is responsible for. The leader of this volunteer work is Grace. She apportioned the members of the team their various tasks clearly. An effective team leader will promote a high level of morale and make each member feels supported and valued. During the designing part, most volunteers had many different ideas and we shared them and saw each other’s viewpoints. Communication is a vital factor of all interpersonal interaction and especially that of a team.

Go to St.Paul's Church
I went to St. Paul's Church twice during five-days- holiday (April 29th --- May 3rd). It was on the Taiping South Road. I have never been to a church before and I was very curious about it. I heard that St. Paul's Church was built in 1923 and it was the first regular Christian church in Nanjing, so I decided to go there and wanted to learn something about the Christian.
On April 29th, my grandfather and I went there at about 2 o’clock in the afternoon and the activity had already begun. Many people were singing when we arrived. I paid attention to the structure of this old church because I did not know how to sing these hymns. After this activity, a young woman told me there were many kinds of weekly activities, including prayer meeting, literacy class, Bible reading, choir practice and a Chinese young adult meeting in this church.
On May 2nd, Christopher and I went to St. Paul's Church at about two thirty in the afternoon and the activity had already begun. This time, I paid more attention to what father had said. First, father told us the story of Joseph who was sold by his brothers, but he never hated his brothers. Father mentioned that this behavior shows the respect of god. In our daily life, we cannot bear someone any grudge. In order to respect god, our hearts should be full of love. In Holy Bible, it points “Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; rejoiceth not in iniquith, but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth.”
I really like these activities and I found it was exciting. After father’s words, I realized the importance of kindness. Kindness is one of the most fascinating qualities of our human experience. It is gratifying to watch as humans share their love, generosity and good nature. It does not matter what cultural background you have. Every person has an obligation to be kind

I am buttering the breadOn April 11th, I joined GCA cooking activity which was organized by Ms. Bartell. Our group’s teacher is Ms. Beath. She taught us how to make jelly, bread and butter pudding.
First, Ms. Beath asked us to go to Su Guo to buy some materials, such as eggs, slices of bread, raisins, milk and so on. She has already prepared vanilla extract and cinnamon because these two spices are difficult to buy in the regular supermarket. When all the materials were ready, Ms. Beath told us to butter the bread first and then cut the bread into fingers and laid them in the bottom of a big dish which she has already prepared. We also needed to sprinkle in raisins when we laid the bread. Meanwhile, some students beat together eggs and milk. Then they added sugar, vanilla extract and cinnamon into the eggs and milk. Finishing stirring, eggs and milk were poured over the bread layers. Next we have to wait for about 1 hour so that the bread soaked up all of the flavors. Finally, we put it into microwave on medium power for 4-5 minutes until it began to set at the edges.
While we were waiting for bread and butter pudding, Ms. Beath taught us how to make jelly. It is quite easy to make jelly. We needed to buy some powders of jelly in the western shop. Then we mixed the powers with hot and cold water. Finally we put it into refrigerator and waited for few hours.
I found this cooking activity was very interesting. I think western food will be more and more popular in china and become an essential part of Chinese food culture in the future.

Vitas Nanjing Concert
my grandfather and me
before the performanceOn May 2nd , I went to Vitas Nanjing Concert with my grandfather and Christopher. The concert started at seven thirty in Nanjing Olympic Sports Center and we went there at about 6 o’clock. The theme of this concert is “Nessun dorma”.
Last year, I turned my attention to Vitas because Ms. Korda showed a lot of videos about Vitas in art class and I enjoyed them very much. I searched lots of information about Vitas after class. I found that he is a Russian pop singer, composer, actor and fashion designer. His music is straightforward pop influenced by techno and occasionally classical opera. I really hoped to go to his concert. This is the reason why I chose this performance.
At the beginning of the concert, the announcer not only introduced Vitas but also introduced the whole band which includes a guitarist, a drummer, a bass player and so on. As you know, a person cannot be successful without others’ help. Similarly, Vitas cannot be successful without the whole band’s help. Vitas dressed up as a robot and acted like a robot as well when he sang the first song. During the concert, Vitas changed clothes frequently and each costume was very attractive.
I love this concert very much because the songs which vitas sang in the concert were very pleasing. He applied his mind to each song. His earth-shattering, superhigh-pitched and energetic countertenor voice is notable.
This concert was exciting because Vitas sang Opera #2 which is my favorite song at the end of the concert and I also found Vitas is quite handsome. In addition, I appreciate his insistence in music. Every memorable act in the history of the world is a triumph of enthusiasm. Vitas is successful because he is enthusiastic. I think people can accomplish miracles with enthusiasm.

the artwork and meOn 29th February, I went to Nanjing Art Museum which is on No.12 Fourth Alley with my friends at 10 o’clock in the morning. The museum exhibited a great many photographs and paintings.
After reading the poster, I found out all the photographs and paintings here are about Indonesia Bali by an artist Zhang Wenxi who is a returned overseas Chinese from Indonesia. Most paintings describe a friendly people, scenic beauty and unique culture of Bali. We did not have any tickets and we did not find any brochures either because this is a free exhibition. The reasons why we choose this museum are that exhibition here is free and not far away. In addition, Nanjing Art Museum is very regular and famous.
Through these terrific, fantastic and vivid photographs and paintings, I can not help asking “Is Bali an unreal place in today’s changing world?” The landscape and views that photographs show really make visitors unforgettable. My favorite artwork is the painting which describes different people wearing different clothes doing different things. I appreciate this artwork is not only because of the beautiful drawing, but this painting also seems to tell us every person in Bali is an artist in some form, whether it is weaving, carving, basketry and so on. The artwork expresses people’s hard –working and Zhang Wenxi’s love of Bali.
I enjoyed this exhibition and I think it is very interesting. It tells me how attractive the Bali is, how friendly the people are, how unique the religion is and how beautiful the view is in Bali. I also think this exhibition is like an advertisement that tells visitors the most wonderful destination for them to visit Indonesia is Bali. Fortunately, museum allows visitors to take pictures. The environment of the museum was very quiet although there were lots of people. I decide to go to more exhibitions next time.
